The Snow in Chile is Piling Up!

We are in the heart of the season here in Chile and it is turning into a very spectacular one!  The overall season forecast had said it was to be a dry start with El Niño ending and then a great last half of the ski season with La Niña coming into play.  It looks to be accurate as some areas had a slower start and now the storms are becoming frequent and big!

The northern ski areas of Chile which include Portillo, Valle Nevado, el Colorado and La Parva saw a slow start opening at the beginning of July instead of mid June.  However since then the snowfall has picked up as the storms are now rolling in regularly and these areas all have received two meters of snow fall to date.  The last meter has fallen just in the last couple of weeks!  So August and September should prove to be a great time for lots of fresh turns in the dry Andean snow.

Meanwhile, in the southern ski areas including Nevados de Chillan, Corralco, and Pucon they have been receiving good snowfall all season and are now being hammered with big storms.  My friend in Nevados de Chillan is reporting that he has not seen so much snow fall so quickly in the 12 years he has resided there.  They have received 2 meters over 5 days!  In the Volcan Lonquimay-Corralco area they received over 7 feet in one storm just 4 days ago and people could not travel for a couple days as roads took a while to be cleared!

So if you were thinking about Chile as a get away for a ski fix it would be as good time to come down! As always the last half of July to mid September when we schedule all our tours is again proving to be a great time to ski in Chile and 2011 is agoing to be very very good!  In fact the last half of September could be fantastic as well so stay tuned.  We may add a tour on!

See you on the slopes!
